The Heiligen-Geist Church in Barmstedt

Image Copyright: Brbel Meisner

The Heilig-Geist church in Barmstedt is unfortunately as so many churches not open when one is there and is looking for inner peace and serenity. But worshipping takes place regularly, announced on a sign-post at the village entrance.

Construction above old building
This imposing building is a 'new building' on an old foundation, built by the Earl Wilhelm Adolf of Rantzau. The tower and the west wall are still part of the old church, but received a clinker to show the face we can see on the picture.

High up
The mix of all sorts of styles has worked here well: The nave is a baroque hall. The 53,2 metres high tower, in times of need always a rescue place for citizens, shows elements of Romanticism. The tower is called in the vernacular 'Schusterahle' (shoemaker's awl) probably because it is a characterising trade in Barmstedt. Two bells are hanging in the tower, one made of bronze, the other made of steel. In contrast to that, the steeple helmet is slim and uprising, Gothic.

2.196 pipes and 31 organ stops
The organ was built by the Schnitger student Joh. Hinrich Klapmeyer in two years, from 1719 to 1720. After 240 years in 1960, it had to be completely reconditioned.
