Elmshorn isn't situated near the North Sea or the Elbe, but 'only' at the river Krückau. Thus right in the middle of the countryside. And still Elmhorn suffered heavily, like many other villages situated at the Krückau and Pinnau during the North Sea storm surge on the 16th/17th February 1962. An enormous mass of water pressed into the Elbe's estuary and from there up the river into the Krückau.
