The Wedeler Roland is the town's landmark. Right in the middle of the town centre the stone fellow with his golden equipment keeps vigil over the region from his pedestal. In the back the marketplace, the guarding look over the nearby Elbe.

Market onlooker made of stone
Roland of Wedel, alias Charlemagne, who wasn't only know in Wedel for his advocacy of market justice. Day and night and at wind and all weather he stands and watches permanently the happenings. The statue was constructed by the Schauenburger earls at the municipal marketplace.

Past and present
Where once carriages and horse lined the roads, today the Roland of Wedel stands directly at the main road from Hamburg via Wedel and Uetersen to Elmshorn, only circa 80 metres from the Ernst-Barlach-Museum, which also worth a visit.
